The numbers shown on the table above represent the hours I spent on that media within that day.From the table,there are six categories of media use.These media are the ones I frequently utilise.There are no TV or Radio category for my media use as I rarely watch TV or listen to the radio when I am in Australia.In these two weeks,I spent most of my time on Internet browsing.Based on the basic features of the Internet such as widespread usability and access,people can have entirely new forms of social interaction,activities,and organising.When I just open the Internet Explorer,Yahoo! is my homepage.So,I spent lots of time on Yahoo!.No matter Yahoo or Google,these websites provide many free services to the general public.Search engine is particularly useful for people to search some stuff on the Internet.For example,when I just type the word "University of Queensland",there are already 8,940,000 results found on the search engine.Based on the websites or yahoo knowledge we search,we can get more information about University of Queensland,even the reputation of this university.When I get something unfamiliar with,I just go to wikipedia to find more information.Of course there are some misinformation on the wikipedia,but issue of misinformation is very common in the world of the Internet.This is simply because everyone can post something on most websites,even people are just expressing their opinions rather than telling the facts.
Apart from Internet browsing,I always use my Iphone as my music player.As I am on the way to the uni,or travelling on the bus,I would plug my ears with the headphone to enter my music-world.Although it is enjoyable,it may be a way to hinder us from communicating with others.Nowadays,most people possess smart phone,laptop,or E-Reader.Technology is changing our original communicative method from a direct way(face-to-face communication) to an indirect way(via the Internet).Therefore,Journalism and Communication is actually affected by the changing technology and vibrant media.Moreover,back to the topic I am talking about,listening to music can be a way of brainwashing as different songs have their own different contents.
On the other hand,I spent 19.5hours on Facebook in these two weeks.To me,Facebook is a really good social networking website.It's good or bad,just depend on how you use it.As I study overseas,Facebook does help me to keep contact with my friends in Hong Kong.There are no geographical barrier in the Facebook world.You can join any pages as you want.Once you log in the Facebook,you start communicating with others,even you just click the "Like" button.We can express our feelings,share something funny or upload our photos on Facebook.It's quite interactive.Once Facebook has the videoteleconference function,we can have the "face-to-face" communication on it.
The fourth highest media usage in these two weeks is applications of Iphone.Smart phone offers us many types of applications,example like dictionary,WhatsApp Messanger,Talkbox,etc.Different application has its own function.Today,we won't use the smart phone for call in/call out function only.We can use the internet-enabled phone to read the online news,play the online games,or run the social networking programme like Facebook.Even we stay at home all the time,we can still be connected to the outer world.Smart phone functions as the mini-PC.Of course,smart phone cannot develop so quickly without Internet.So,Internet is very important in our daily lives.It builds up a new platform for people to communicate.Every people need to learn a new way and new styles to communicate with others,not just the community we are living in,but also the other parts of the world.
Furthermore,in these two weeks,I read online news everyday.The sources of those online news can be online newspaper,Yahoo news,Facebook or applications of Iphone.Reading online news is more convenient than buying the traditional newspaper.Turn on the computer,click the button,we can read the most updated news via the Internet.We don't need to wait for another morning to buy a newspaper of a new day.Moreover,most online newspapers have the video clips for us to "read".This does save our time as someone do not want to spend too much time on reading the words on the traditional newspapers.In this decade,as most people get access to the Internet,information sharing gets easier than the past.Online news provide a chance for everyone to know what's happening in the world.It shows the development of mass media is in progress,and Journalism,in a large extent,is seriously affected by the existence of Internet.
